THE Philippines is transforming schoolyards into vegetable gardens in a bid to fight junk food addictions that are causing serious health problems in the country.
At one of the project's showcase primary schools in Manila, parents have joined teachers and students in tending the plots, which boast a wide assortment of nutritious greens.
At Paranaque Central Elementary School, pupils in khaki trousers are kept busy removing weeds and watering crops. The upcoming harvest includes okras, eggplant and moringa leaves.
All available space is being used to grow the greens, which are then picked in cycles - as free food for the mostly poor pupils, or to be sold as part of a livelihood project for their families.
'Children are taught proper nutrition, and we involve parents in the project because we want to take families away from a lifestyle of eating junk food,' said principal Edita Baggayan, 65.
School nutritionist and cook Dulce Aranda said the programme was having a measurable impact
