Fast Retailing Co., operator of the Uniqlo casual wear chain, opened its first Taiwan store in Taipei on Thursday. The company will also open an outlet in Malaysia next month, hoping to create a network of Uniqlo stores across Asia over the next two years.

Yanai plans Uniqlo growth in Asia

KUALA LUMPUR (Kyodo) Tadashi Yanai, president of Fast Retailing Co., which runs Japan's leading clothing retail chain Uniqlo, said here Wednesday there will be more Uniqlo stores across Southeast Asia over the next one or two years.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the official launch of Uniqlo's maiden outlet in Malaysia on Thursday, Yanai said the company plans to expand into the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Currently, there are three Uniqlo stores in Singapore. But with a total retail space of 2,140 sq. meters, the three-story Kuala Lumpur store located inside the Fahrenheit 88 shopping mall will be the biggest in the region so far.

The company has been expanding its overseas operations in recent years as sales show signs of peaking in Japan. Fast Retailing has forecast full-year net profit to fall next year for the first time in four years due to stiff competition.

There are currently 808 Uniqlo stores in Japan and 136 abroad. China alone has 54 stores while South Korea has 48.
