reddy84 come on don't get it wrong, I didn't learn english in Malaysia, though I'm in malaysia during 1 year, I don't think I improved my english level higher than 1 point no such luck, just i don't gonna judge locals just it was my common meaning about english here, no offence.

Re: How do you rate your english level ?
Wondering who gave themselves 10 as 10 here is defined as a native speaker. Any Brits here?

Re: How do you rate your english level ?
reddy84, sorry if I seem rude but no you can't improve your English in Malaysia simply by talking to locals. You would get the wrong accent, the grammar would be out, the vocabulary would be peculiar, etc.
If we are talking about someone with very little or no knowledge of English then I agree that in Malaysia they will pick up conversational skills. But the level of English in Malaysia is quite poor even though many Malaysians speak fluently (does not mean correctly). Even official announcements have a lot of mistakes in them!

Re: How do you rate your english level ?
one of my fav. poems
If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

Re: How do you rate your english level ?
I think i made myself very clear that spoken english and written english are two different things!! My advice is, read-up the entire post before u comment!! Anywhere in the world, you'll find the same situation!! EVEN in russia!! Just because u are a native speaker doesn't make ur russian PERFECT grammatically!! When it comes to accent, everybody has it!! So stop whining. You want to improve ur english so badly, AND if u want the PERFECT english, pay money and go and learn, go study!!! Stop complaining that we locals don't have the PERFECT english!! Well atleast, we speak the language!!
Lost in translation!!
Re: How do you rate your english level ?
Wow, such a hot discussion=) I've learned one single rule that helpled me to improve my english level "Practice, practice, and practice!". Thx to my teacher of Business English John Loyd
