MALAYSIA:POLICE DETAIN 10 SUSPECTED IRANIAN DRUG TRAFFICKERS IN KLIA
NAM NEWS NETWORK Feb 3rd, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (NNN-Bernama): Police on Wednesday detained 10 Iranian suspects who tried to smuggle in drugs at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang during two separate raids.
It was the highest number of arrests in a single day, involving Iranians, thus marking a new trend in international drug smuggling which was earlier monopolized by Africans.
According to a source from the Bukit Aman Narcotics Department, six of the Iranian men were detained at about 5.50am while trying to board a limousine at the KLIA lobby while another four were detained at 2.30pm at the same place.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspects, aged between 20 and 30, had taken a flight from Iran and transited in Dubai, before continuing their flight to Kuala Lumpur.
The source said police seized a total of about two kilograms of drugs, believed to be syabu, from the six suspects.
One of the suspects had hidden the drugs among clothes in a luggage while five others had swallowed drug capsules which were found in their stomach.
Police also seized about two kilograms of drugs, believed to be syabu, from four other suspects detained in the afternoon.
Two of the suspect had affixed the drugs to their body, arms, stomach and private parts while two others had used their stomach as carriers by swallowing drugs in capsule form, he said.
He added that all the drugs seized Wednesday were worth about RM2 million.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Narcotics Department deputy director Othman Harun when contacted by Bernama said there has been a change in the international drug smuggling trend.
He added that Iranians were actively involved in drug trafficking as last month alone, more than 20 Iranians were detained, for trying to smuggle drugs into the country.
On Tuesday, an Iranian was detained in KLIA for trying to smuggle in 87 capsules, believed to be syabu, using his stomach as a carrier by swallowing the capsules while three others had attempted to fool the authorities by hiding drugs, believed to be syabu, in 16 hair spray containers, weighing 6,778 grams.
All drugs seized were also worth about RM2 million.
Last Saturday, two Iranians were detained at a luxury hotel in Bukit Bintang and one of them was found to have swallowed drug capsules weighing 363 grams worth about RM140,000.
Othman said the modus operandi of drug traffickers from Iran was using the stomach as a carrier by swallowing the drug contained capsules before their flights and they later purge them out upon reaching their destination.
“Such groups are active because there are middle men from their own country here who later distribute the drugs, using their tourist passes, as an avenue to fool the authorities.
“This is a serious menace and a trend that does not only involve Malaysia but globally. This is a global problem. Although we do not have a direct association with our counterparts in Iran, but we have other sources of information to combat the menace,” he said.

Capital punishment in Malaysia applies to murder, drug trafficking, treason, and waging war against Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King). Recently, the law has been extended to include acts of terrorism. Any terrorists, and anyone who aids terrorists, financially or otherwise, are liable to face the death penalty.
Only High Courts has the jurisdiction to sentence someone to death. Juvenile cases involving the death penalty are heard in High Courts instead of the juvenile court where other juvenile cases are heard. Appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court are automatic. The last resort for the convicted is to plead pardon or clemency. Pardons or clemency are granted by the Ruler or Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) of the state where the crime is committed or the Yang di-Pertuan Agong if the crime is committed in the Federal Territories or when involving members of the armed forces. Death sentences are carried out by hanging as provided in Section 281 of the Criminal Procedure Code. There shall be no death sentence against a pregnant woman or a child.
