Kuala Lumpur, Dec 23 (IANS) Malaysia is to retrench at least 4,749 workers, mostly from the electronics sector, that has a large number of technical personnel from South Asia, according to a news report. Foreigners retrenched by 137 employers over the next three months would have to return home as per their job contracts, Human Resource Minister S. Subramaniam was quoted by The Star newspaper as saying.

The minister said the number of people to be retrenched included some 1,500 workers at data storage firm Western Digital in Kuching, Sarawak state, and were updated as of Monday, the newspaper said.

“My ministry will ensure that the workers get the compensation due to them.”

Subramaniam said under the Employment (Termination And Lay-off Benefits) Regulations, workers would be compensated a part of their salary for each year of service.

For workers who have been with a company for two years or less, compensation would be 10 days of salary per year of work.

For those who clocked in between two and five years, it would be 15 days of salary per year and for those above five years, 20 days.

Subramaniam said the government would look into getting alternative employment for the workers or retrain them.

“So far, we have not held dialogues with these workers but we will be contacting them soon and setting up counselling sessions,” he said.

The prosperous Southeast Asian economy is hit by global recession.

Subramaniam said he was not sure whether the number of retrenched workers would increase but added that some things were beyond the government’s control.

“However, we will ensure the retrenchment is done fairly,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur, Jan 22 (IANS) Malaysia has decided to freeze the recruitment of foreigners in the manufacturing and service sectors to provide jobs to locals, a media report said Thursday. Announcing a cabinet decision, Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam said Wednesday that cabinet members felt the time had come to look at the welfare of locals who faced possible lay-offs, New Straits Times reported.

He said employers would have to recruit locals.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said he would discuss with Subramaniam how the new decision could be implemented.

Speaking after his ministry’s monthly gathering, Albar said in the event employers had to downsize, they must stop engaging foreign workers and retrench those working here first.

“This is not the time for employers to ask for foreign workers. The first to be retrenched should be foreigners and not locals.”

Albar was commenting on a human resources ministry’s report that about 45,000 workers, mostly Malaysians, would be retrenched over the Chinese New Year season.

“There is no valid reason to bring in foreign workers at this time. I am facing all sorts of pressures (to bring in the workers).

“I will hold discussions with Subramaniam on how we can extend this policy to more sectors.”

He said Malaysians should not try to circumvent the government’s decision by introducing service contracts or outsourcing projects.

Albar said the government’s decision that owners of petrol stations should stop employing foreigners had fallen on deaf ears. “I see foreigners working there. This is a clear breach of government policy.”

He added that people should extend their cooperation to the government as it worked to face the weakening economic situation.

A prosperous tiger economy of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is heavily dependent upon foreign workers for its industry, service sector and even for domestic maids.

An estimated three million foreign workers come here from neighbouring Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, besides South Asia.

A large number of IT hands from India form part of this work force.

Понимаю, что новости как новости уже устарели по датам, но все же это должно быть интересно многим. Потому как могут быть теперь всякие препоны по получению новых рабочих виз.. Не забываем, что в Малайзии чиновник в иммигрейшн царь и бог насчет выдачи виз... А не просто исполнитель закона.

Это касается низкоквалифицированных рабочих из соседних стран, о чем и было упомянуто в статьях выше. Я тоже читал несколько статьей, что собираются выдворять сотнями тысяч индонезиййцев и филиппинцев. Нас это вряд ли затронет, так как у соседних стран другие визовые отношения с Малайзии и им разрешено заниматься низкоквалифицированной работой в Малайзии, а нам нет.

Высококвалифицированным иностранным сотрудникам часто просто не найти альтернативы среди местного населения. У нас компания каждый месяц нанимает по несколько иностранцев (в основном из Европы и Америк) и очень-очень редко местных (коих процентов 20% в компании где-то). Так отказов в визах не было ни разу за всю историю компании. Визы вообще моментом дают без каких либо проблем (только форму через сайт заполнить и пару документов подвезти надо).
